Finding your NHS number

Your NHS number can be found in the majority of paperwork or correspondence you receive from the NHS, including:

Online

You can find your NHS number online by using the Find your NHS number service.

You can also find it by logging in to:

the NHS App (you’ll need to register if you have not used it before)

some GP online services

your GP office

You can inquire for your NHS number by calling your doctor’s office.

You might need to present identification documentation while calling your GP’s office or going in person.

health cards

England no longer sends out medical cards with your NHS number.

You do not require a replacement if you already owned one and lost it.

Obtaining an NHS number

If you enrolled for NHS care in England, Wales, or the Isle of Man, you should have an NHS number if you have received NHS care or treatment.

Your NHS number is given to you shortly after birth or the first time you receive care or treatment through the NHS.

Unless you are given a new number for a reason like adoption or gender reassignment, this one is good for life.

You can register with a GP practice to obtain an NHS number if you have never received care or treatment through the NHS.

If you don’t already have one, an NHS number will be given to you when you register.

Your NHS number will be displayed on the registration letter that you will receive in the mail.

Contact NHS England’s customer service department if you are denied care because you do not know your NHS number or do not have one.
